In Joomla 1.6 how do I change the following on a downloaded template?
1. I have this huge area (banner?) up at the top that has a large colored box with fancy designs scrolled around the edges. I wanted to put my company’s name and a picture up there, but I can’t find where to go in through the admin site to do so and I’m wondering if I need to go through the files….
2. How do you change the color/font for the “site name” and “article names”. I don’t like the font/color right now and have just opted not to have them show up on the main page as a way to solve this for now, but I’d like to know for future reference.

It all depends on the interface of the template.
If you go to Control Panel > Extensions > Template Manager and select your template then you may see configurable settings for logo, colour, site name etc. Also take a look through Control Panel > Site > Global Configuration
If these options aren’t available then download the Firebug add-on for your browser. Use this tool to explore the website and find the direct file locations to change the CSS etc. You will need FTP access to the website for some of this although some will be available through Control Panel > Extensions > Template Manager > Edit HTML or Edit CSS
